Sampled 7/10/04. The black fruits and spice run rampent through the glass from the color to the nose and to your palate. Because of the firm tannin structure in this still young wine, the finish is not as smooth as it will be some years down the road. This is an excellent wine and truly among the finest California Merlots ever produced. I can see why it was the 1 wine of the year for WS, but what clearly vaulted this wine to its 1 spot was its low release price of $42/bottle. Nonetheless, I can understand why people are now willing to pay $110+ a bottle for their taste of greatness.

Had good enough fortune to try this on a number of different sittings, including one with Barb the winemaker at her home. I guess many could debate that this wine should be "WOTY" when there are so many great wines that were released this year, many with much high ratings, but I was very impressed. First you'll notice a great deal of ripe fruit in the nose, very pleasant, and one of the best I've seen on a Merlot (Domestic), the pallet is rich with cherry, currants, and spice with a nice 30 second finish of dark fruit. While this is very enjoyable now, I think it needs a few years cellaring to be at it's best.
