The 2001 KL is another great effort by Mike Trujillo, who just got promoted to the head of Sequioa Grove. This is a steal considered the pedigree of the grape source (Morisoli and Lamb). He also makes a pair reseve from those vineyards. I have been a long time fan of Mike's wine since 1993 and we hope the wine stays at its reasonable price level.

This wine was really tannic in the beginning, but some time in the glass works wonders! The spiciness in the nose and on the palate really come out with a bit of fruit. This wine is gorgeous in the glass, with great color and legs. Definitely will improve with a year or two in the bottle.

Initial quite shut down in the glass, the wine eventually opened up to reveal a strong Licorice/spicyness on the nose. Again the licorice is a strong component of the flavor profile. The tannin/fruit balance is still being dominated by the tannin, so I will let this wine rest for a while longer before trying again.
