(France / Rhone / Southern Rhone / Chateauneuf du Pape)
RATED: 12/01/2003
COMMENTS: (single blind): Medium ruby, fat tears, light rim. Guarded nose, hint of black currant. Full body, fat alcohol, stiff neck, some acidity, lots of tannins. Velvety aftertaste, bit bitter. Score: 50 + 3 for otpic + 12 for bouquet + 16 for taste + 5 for overall = total score of 86.

This wine seems underwined in relation to the alcohol level (the label states 14,5% but I am sure it is higher) and reminds me of a Da Capo 98 one year ago. Could be that this wine is already a bit closed now.

COMMENTS: (not blind): Very light ruby, transparent, beautiful tears. Complex nose, kirsch, red and black berries, touch of soap. Medium body, again kirsch - very fine but explicit, well balanced. Very long aftertaste with slowly appearing solid tannins. Beautiful wine. Score: 50 + 4 for optic + 15 for bouquet + 8 for taste + 8 for overall = total score of 95.

Comment: Seems I tasted the first bottle too early after delivery as the disintegrated aftertaste suggests. This is clearly a fine wine, although I have to admit that I tasted not blind and was maybe somewhat influenced - but I am usually rather label resistant.

(France / Rhone / Southern Rhone / Chateauneuf du Pape)
RATED: 01/01/2003
COMMENTS: (not blind): Light ruby, clear, fine tears. Somewhat closed bouquet, hint of red and dark berries, especially strawberries, touch kirsch. Medium to full body, rather fruity, good acidity, enough tannin. Long aftertaste, limited harmony, starts silky and gets velvet. Not your CdP at first look, could be also a Syrah. Score: 50 + 3 for optics + 13
for bouquet + 17 for taste + 7 for overall = 90 points.
