COMMENTS: The Southing bottling from Sea Smoke one-ups the Botella bottling. Added in this bottling is a more elegant and defined structure, although the style is still more Syrah than old world pinot. I also pick up an earthy component on the palate. The finish is wonderful and extended.

2001 Sea Smoke Pinot Noir - Southing
(USA / California / Santa Barbara / Santa Rita Hills)
ALCOHOL: 14.4%
CASES: 249
RATED: 12/08/2003
COLOR: Red Purple.
AROMA: Dark Fruits. Smoky.
FLAVOR: Dark Fruits. Smoky. Clove. Blackberry.
PROFILE: Crisp Acidity. Balanced. Rich Body. Moderate Tannin. Long Finish.
COMMENTS: This is my favorite Pinot Noir of all time! Although, to be fair, this wine is constructed much more in the style of a Cabernet, with Tannins featuring prominently and a complex structure. A bit of smoke is hinted at both on the nose and in the mouth, making this a great food wine. All Sea Smoke wines are great, but this is truly remarkable.
