Sampled 12/13/04. The color is still strong without excessive signs of aging. The nose is all Opus. The wine, however, is a bit of a disappointment after that. Although the classic Opus layering and fruit is as distinctive as it is obvious (this wine is very similar to the 1995 Opus), the wine is gets tired (a bit of a surprise for the power 1991 vintage) on the finish with the fruit falling off and leaving too acidic a finish. This wine was much better several years ago.

Ahhh, this was back in the day when Opus One was actually one of the best red blends out of California. Since 1997 the quality has fallen off considerably but this 1991 might be one of the finest efforts from Opus One.
A bit restrained at first, finally the plums, cedar, spice box and very noticeable gunflint started to emerge. The nose in a word was FAT! What distinguished this wine from the others was a mindblowing midpalate with several layers of flavor. It had strong acidity and balanced but noticeable tannin. Too bad it was my first and last Opus '91, as I think this has about three more years of life before it starts downhill.
