Sampled 3/13/04. The cork was pushing up a full 1/8 of an inch on this bottle, which was scary enough. Opening a Second Growth from the less-than-exceptional year of 1979 also meant I had my back-up bottle at the ready. My fears were not confirmed. The wine was in pretty good shape and barely over the hill. Drink now if you've got it. The nose was Boreaux but mustier than usual for Leoville LCs. The fruit was light but the wine had the earthy undertones like so many LLCs. There is no decanting time involved for this wine and I was sure to Vin-Vac the bottle between pourings in order to save its flavors, which did start to drop of just a bit if it remained open in the glass for more than 30 minutes. Perhaps this is a preview of what the '97 Leoville might be like in 20 years.
