2002 d'Arenberg - Shiraz Viognier - The Laughing Magpie
(Australia / South Australia / McLaren Vale)
RATED: 06/21/2004
COMMENTS: Dark reddish-purple. Rich aroma of blackberry, black cherry, plum, raspberry, cassis, vanilla, graphite, perfume, leaves, cedar, eucalyptus, leather. Semi-sweet to semi-dry. Full body. Medium tannins. Medium to long finish. Delicious...not as black-hearted as straight d'Arenberg Shiraz, but the feminine notes here are only accenting touches (like a tough guy that's not afraid to cry). Aussie character through and through, and extremely dense/rich. Excellent mouthfeel and very substantial length. Amazing, and underpriced. I think there's enough acidity and tannins here to lay down at least 5 years, but it's fantastic already.
