Had this up against the 2001 Lewelling Cab. Neal still held its own, but was not quite as good as previous bottles. Nice tannic structure with dark Cabernet fruits.

Although this wine is still not ready drink, it provides guilty pleasure at this stage. Violet chocolate infused with edgy tannins. I have a more complete tasting note on this from a prior tasting.

This is going to be a great wine. Opaque purple in color. Intense aromas of Dark fruit and black current. Flavors of dark fruit, black current, oak and chocolate. Heavy tannins that need a few years. A smooth rich body and a 45 second finish. Excellent

COMMENTS:
This is the second bottle I've had this year and it actually went down better than the first one. Very tannic in the first hour or so, with a strong alcohol smell, but it settled down nicely for dinner and afterward. After the tannins wore off, it gave very forward red & black fruits and berries with spicy leather undertones, with a lightly sweet medium finish that crept down the back of my tongue. A great deal for what you pay and it should cellar for at least 7-10 more years in my opinion.

COMMENTS:
The 2001 Neal Family Cabernet is going to be a cult classic. Anyone who can get ahold of a case, should do so and store it for a decade. Even now, well before its peak, this wine's bouquet produces a magnificent aroma of licorice and pepper. In the mouth, the velvety wine's viscousity is so prodigious that one can feel its legs on their tongue. A highly diverse group of flavors is present on the palate. The tip of the tongue senses blueberries and plums. On the tongue's center, one gets mild herbs and chocolate against the purvasive flavor and texture of jam. This wine produces at least three distinct flavors while in the mouth, and its finish last for 25+ seconds. The best part is that I believe this wine will improve steadily for more than a decade. I sincerely believe that this wine will become one of the great california cabernets.

COMMENTS:
Wow! The 2001 Neal sets THE benchmark for all new Napa wineries. The color of this wine is a deep, reddish-purple. With sufficient decanting (try 4 hrs), perfumes of chocolate, cassis and blackberry leap from the glass. On the palate, the wine teases with opulent dark fruits, tobacco and more chocolate. These flavors eventually give way to a multi-dimensional and harmoniously tannic backbone. Rich, layered and complex this wine is moist and chewy. The finish goes on and on.... A must buy.
