PROFILE: Astringent Mouthfeel. Rich Voluminous Extracted Body. Heavy Tannin. Medium Finish.
COMMENTS: Super concentrated from vine of 40-115 years, this wine is similar to d'Arenbeg's dead arm. Hugh potential here. Will have to taste it again in a few year to see how it develops.

1999 David Arthur Cabernet Sauvignon
(USA / California / Napa)
RATED: 12/10/2004
COMMENTS: High hopes and expectation, but the wine failed to excite. Very average quality. This wine has the typical initial Wow in so many California cab, it excite you in the first glass but failed to continue to evolve into a more complex and interesting wine. I have tried some other vintages of DA's wine including the 1147, but for some reason this bottle of 1999 is not up to par.

1994 Chateau Montrose
(France / Bordeaux / St-Estephe)
ALCOHOL: 12.5%
RATED: 11/07/2004
COMMENTS: Tasted from a Magnum.
The wine was quite closed and tight in the beginning. The color was still quite purple suggesting less aging then it actually did. After decanting for almost 2 hours, the wine started to show some of its true character. A classic bordeaux nose, with the rustic and earthy side of a St Estephe. A core of cedar, lead pencil aroma as a backbone to support a supple but not overripe black fruit flavors, the wine has good mid palate viscosity balanced by moderate sweet tannin. The finish was a bit abrupt but the wine has good concentration and nice attack with a firm grip.

1997 Rene Leclerc - Lavaux St. Jacques
(France / Burgundy / Cote de Nuits / Gevrey-Chambertin)
ALCOHOL: 13.5%
RATED: 11/07/2004
COMMENTS: The color has shown some aging from a lighter rim. A seductive nose revealing hints of red fruit. Spicy but soft, this wine has a silky texture along with a rose pedal like bouquet. A very charming and fine wine. Soft and caressing body without any sharp edge, this wine should be able to develop more complexity.

1979 Chateau Mouton Rothschild
(France / Bordeaux / Pauillac)
RATED: 10/27/2004
COMMENTS: My first Mouton, yes I was lucky to had this wine when I was 12. Don't remember much about the wine but the label that I vividly remembered. Tasted it again in 1999, I was a bit disappointed by the standard of Mouton. Not much to offer here, just a tired uninteresting wine.

1985 Chateau Mouton Rothschild
(France / Bordeaux / Pauillac)
RATED: 10/27/2004
COMMENTS: I just love the rich and forwardness of this sexy and complex Mouton. The bouquet of ripe fruit is wonderfully complemented by the herby and smoky character. Unlike the more structured Mouton, this is actually quite enjoyable and charming to drink with food.

Tasted from a Magnum.

1994 Chateau Latour
(France / Bordeaux / Pauillac)
RATED: 10/27/2004
COMMENTS: I am a big fan of the 1994 bordeaux. They are good bargain and the quality is definitely understated by the press (which is a good thing for our consumer.) This classic Latour exhibits an intense textbook nose of pauillac with cassis, pain grille and ceder scents that build in the glass. It is a multi-layered and high power Latour having a precise structure and fleshy glycerin that is drinking very well now. It will certainly improved with age.

1985 Krug - Clos du Mesnil
(France / Champagne)
RATED: 10/26/2004
COMMENTS: Great mature aromatics but appeared to be a bit tired as the bubbles were not quite as lively as the 1982. Not sure why...but it can be appreciated more like a very well balanced still wine. Either way, it is a very enjoyable wine, classic and elegant, especially it is a treat from a very generous friend.
