1982 Robert Mondavi Cabernet Sauvignon - Reserve

A friend was nice enough to share this bottle with us this evening; We smelled it for 10 minutes prior to pouring; it had a beautiful oaky nose worthy of a classic Mondavi Reserve label; the first swig revealed a well-structured semi-tannic wine that's had plenty of time to develop in the bottle. The feel was a little thin, but it had solid flavors of of cherry, oak and leather. We decanted for about an hour an it still needed some time to completely open up. While the wine was still intact and very drinkable, it didn't overwhelm me. Most Mondavi Reserve Cabs do pretty well and I consider them to be age-worthy wines, but I fear this vintage is just past its prime.
