2001 d'Arenberg Grenache - The Custodian
(Australia / South Australia / McLaren Vale )

Dark red. Aroma of raspberry, strawberry, blueberry, flowers, charred cedar, graphite, vanilla. Medium to full bodied. Semi-sweet to semi-dry. Medium tannins. Medium finish. Wow, I typically don't care much for grenache (or GSMs), as they're often very light and floral and simple. This is something else. Very richly extracted and decadent, and surprisingly full-bodied. Very raspberry-fruity and starts on the sweet side, but ultimately balanced well and not without some terroir and oak subtleties. Hard to stop drinking. Makes me want to really start trying more straight grenache, perhaps some Clarendon Hills?
