2000 Thierry and Guy - Fat bastard
(France / Languedoc)
ALCOHOL: 12.5%
RATED: 07/02/2004
COLOR: Brick Red.
AROMA: Spice. Cherry.
FLAVOR: Spice. Cherry. Pepper.
PROFILE: Bitter. Unbalanced. Astringent Mouthfeel. Lean Body. Moderate Tannin. Short Finish.
COMMENTS: Although from France, this Syrah is labeled "Shiraz." The atypical graphics on the label are also reminiscent of Australian wines. Be warned, however, this is not your typical Australian Shiraz. Rather it is an uninspired French wine. The bouquet and flavor profile includes cherry, spice and pepper. The wine is disjointed and not drinking that smoothly due to harsh tannins.

FLAVOR: Vanilla. Raspberry. Blueberry. Floral.
PROFILE: Crisp Acidity. Sweet. Balanced. Smooth Mouthfeel. Full Bodied Body. Moderate Tannin. Medium Finish.
COMMENTS: Designated by online wine fans as either: a must buy or a Parker-specific barrel sample scam, I had to try for myself. Aromas of raspberry, blueberry and vanilla. Similar flavors with an additional floral component. Balanced and full-bodied. In the end, an excellent wine for the price.

COLOR: Red Purple.
AROMA: Cherry. Plum. Blackberry.
FLAVOR: Cherry. Smoky. Plum. Blackberry.
PROFILE: Viscous Mouthfeel. Rich Extracted Body. Light Moderate Tannin. Medium Finish.
COMMENTS: This wine is a dark burgundy red. It is over-the-top fruit in the mouth with plums, blackberries, and cherry. The mouthfeel of the wine is lush and velvety, perhaps a little fat. The finish is smoky. A good quality Malbec for the price.

AROMA: Blackberry. Black Currant.
FLAVOR: Black Currant. Leather. Game.
PROFILE: Crisp Acidity. Balanced. Smooth Mouthfeel. Rich Body. Light Moderate Tannin. Medium Finish.
COMMENTS: The bouquet was a bit light when first opened. Over time, however, the wine opened with cassis and blackberry aromas. Flavors of cassis, leather and game. Eventually the dark fruit flavors gave way to deeper, earthier tones.

RATED: 07/06/2004
COLOR: Brick Red.
AROMA: Cedar. Black Currant. Toast.
FLAVOR: Cedar. Black Currant.
PROFILE: Lean Body. Light Tannin. Short Finish.
COMMENTS: A lightly tannic Meritage blend from B.V. From the disappointing 2000 Napa vintage, this wine is drinking watery and light. Aromas and flavors of black currant, cedar and toast. Finish is on the shorter side. Overall a pass.

2002 Beaulieu Vineyard (BV) Chardonnay

COLOR: Straw Yellow.
AROMA: Cream. Oak. Melon.
FLAVOR: Butter. Oak. Melon. Apricot. Earthy.
PROFILE: Crisp Acidity. Unbalanced. Smooth Mouthfeel. Short Finish.
COMMENTS: The Carneros Chard from BV is a simple quaffer, but you can probably find a similar Chard for less money. It initially opens up with cream and melon aromas, but its flavors run through additional components of oak, apricot and earth. A good food wine that paired nicely with seafood.

PROFILE: Crisp Acidity. Unbalanced. Rich Body. Light Moderate Tannin. Medium Finish.
COMMENTS: Strong aromas of chocolate, cherry and oak set up this heavy wine. When tasting, the oakiness eventually gave way to the fruit, with cherry being particularly dominant. A real powerhouse wine that is lacking grace. Don't know if this will ever resolve.

FLAVOR: Dark Fruits. Oak. Plum. Smoky. Black Currant.
PROFILE: Crisp Acidity. Balanced. Complex. Smooth Mouthfeel. Medium Rich Body. Moderate Tannin. Long Finish.
COMMENTS: The 2001 Caymus is a distinctly Napa, with layers of dark, rich fruits wrapped in fine tannins and toasty oak. The aftertaste is long and complex, continuing the evolution of the wines flavors. This one should last for a few years down the road so I will let my remaining bottles rest.

COLOR: Brick Red.
AROMA: Cherry. Floral.
FLAVOR: Woody. Savory. Earthy. Burnt.
PROFILE: Bitter. Tart. Unbalanced. Astringent Mouthfeel. Lean Body. Light Moderate Tannin. Medium Finish.
COMMENTS: Didn't really enjoy the 98 Silver Oak and I am glad that I didn't purchase this bottle. Aromas with a floral note behind the bitter cherry. The mouthfeel was overly astringent, with an earthy burnt taste followed by a woody-dry finish. Drink up, I don't think it will be getting any better.

AROMA: Cherry.
FLAVOR: Dark Fruits. Limestone. Cherry. Blackberry.

COMMENTS: I expected a little more from this one given its price and the good vintage. A moderate bouquet of cherries, with tastes of dark fruits, cherry, blueberry and limestone. The body was fairly rich with a solid tannic backbone. Flavor just came up a bit short.

2002 Domaine Vincent Girardin - Cuvee Saint Vincent
(France / Burgundy / Bourgogne)
ALCOHOL: 13.0%
RATED: 04/03/2005
COMMENTS: I know that having great expectations only sets you up for great disappointments, but I will admit that I opened this bottle with more than the ordinary amount of anticipation. Not, mind you, for its lowly appellation, but rather for the great reputation of its producer. I have had other Girardin wines (most recently an incredible Pommard Premier Cru) that have been REAL good. Sadly, I can not say the same for this disappointment.

2002 Goldeneye Pinot Noir - Migration
(USA / California / Mendocino / Anderson Valley)
RATED: 04/03/2005
COMMENTS: What do you get when a big name Napa Valley winery, famous for its big and brawny Merlot, takes wing and migrates North-Northwest to the Anderson Valley? Migration Pinot Noir! And if you can get past a glass or two, I think you'll agree that this wine may be the Merlot lover's Pinot Noir all season long.

2000 Talley Pinot Noir - Talley Estate Pinot Noir
(USA / California / San Luis Obispo / Arroyo Grande Valley)
RATED: 04/03/2005
COMMENTS: Talley Estate Pinot Noir shows garnet with brickish hues near the rim of the glass while its center is deep beet red. The effects of nearly five years bottle age have softened the wine and created a seamless and aromatically generous Pinot Noir.

2003 Angeline Pinot Noir - Angeline Pinot Noir
(USA / California / Santa Barbara)
RATED: 04/03/2005
COMMENTS: Another well made inexpensive Pinot that I found uninspiring. To be honest, I was on the fence about this one for the duration of its drinking. The Pinot fruit successfully avoids the common pitfalls suffered by so many domestic PNs at this price point, but it is too cloying and a bit astringent in it's finish to be enjoyed for more than a single glass.
