(France / Bordeaux / Cotes de Blaye)
ALCOHOL: 13.0%

COMMENTS: I took a chance on this unknown wine, and was pleasantly surprised. It had a fairly small, but nice, nose; good clarity; very dark red color; very dry; very long finish; lots of tannins. But at the price, I would definitely buy it again.

2000 Marques De Murrieta - Neonato

COLOR: Red Purple.
AROMA: Red Fruits. Oak.
FLAVOR: Red Fruits. Oak. Toast. Black Currant. Jam.
PROFILE: Crisp Acidity. Balanced. Smooth Mouthfeel. Rich Body. Moderate Tannin. Long Finish.
COMMENTS: Had this bottle for a while... No idea how long, where I got it, or what I paid. I was sort of put off by the "Neonato" designation, but decided to open it to go with a hearty, rich beef stew. What a pleasant surprise! It paired perfectly with the stew and really made the meal. I will definitely buy again (if I can find it!).

COMMENTS: This wine was recommended by the sommalier at Market Street (who knew a supermarket would have a sommalier?), and he was spot on. My untrained palate can't identify all the subtle flavors and aromas; so suffice it to say this was really, really good. We enjoyed it with two pasta dishes: shells in red sauce and cannolini in a white cream sauce, and it was wonderful. I will definitely buy more of this wine.

COMMENTS: This was a really good wine, FOR THE PRICE. Lots of tannins; not much nose; medium-long finish. Can't comment on the flavor nuances (untrained palate!), but it went well with dinner of boeuf borguignon (sp?). Definite "buy again," but this time I'd let it cellar for a much longer time.

COMMENTS: A really, really good Syrah. We really tasted the oak barrel aging.
Nice nose; respectably long finish. My wife and I don't really enjoy white wines, so enjoyed this nice red with homemade chicken pot pie. Both were delicious. Would definitely buy more (if it can still be found).

2006 Duckhorn Merlot
(USA / California / Napa)
RATED: 08/20/2009
COMMENTS: Ruby, with hints of purple, with very thick & sticky legs that. Aromas of bell pepper and other green veggies, licorice, varnish, cedar, cola and plum. However, this wine was very hot, both on the nose and on the palate. You really had to pierce through the alcohol to smell and taste the essence of the wine. On the palate, it was very short; what lingers is the alcohol, streaking through the throat.Very firm and austere, juicy, albeit off in structure.

1999 Chateau Montelena Cabernet Sauvignon - Montelena Estate
(USA / California / Napa)
RATED: 08/20/2009
COMMENTS: Upon cutting the wine's capsule, a bad sight greeted me. The cork was tainted with wine, and upon contact with the corkscrew, the cork crumbled. I had to push the cork in. The wine was surprisingly not fully ruined. Some hints of of oxidation was apparent. Still, I detected aromas of leather, and dark fruits. After an hour or so, it smelled of iodine. On the palate, licorice, leather, and rust. However, the wine was very short, the flavors fleeting. The structure was disjointed. After another hour or so, I smelled and tasted cherries. I could only wonder how this wine would have been if it was pristine.

2005 Chateau Faugeres
(France / Bordeaux / St-Emilion)
ALCOHOL: 14.5%

1978 Chateau Ducru-Beaucaillou
(France / Bordeaux / St-Julien)
RATED: 08/14/2009
COMMENTS: What a great nose this wine had. The fruit was still there, but mostly faint dried currants and flowers. The tannins were very soft, virtually almost non-existent, giving way to more ethereal maturation characters. The wine was mostly pure tertiary flavors, with truffles, earth, dust, leather, mushrooms, cedar and tobacco leaves. Very complex. Lean and focused. A wine so gentle on the palate. A great wine! Jo said this was a very elegant wine. I couldn't agree more. This is the oldest wine we've both had thus far.
