1989 Domaine de Trevallon
(France / Provence)
RATED: 08/01/2003
COMMENTS: (not blind): Very bright crimson, rather fat tears. Very nice nose of secondary red currant, green pepper, smoked ham, bit of compost ... Medium body, very fine acidity, some secondary red fruit, soft tannins and more. Long soft velvety aftertaste. Score: 50 + 4 for optic + 15 for bouquet + 18 for taste + 8 for overall = total score of 95.

Made curious by enthousiastic comments on Trevallon 1990 on another BB I remembered the 2 bottles of 1989 I had still in my cellar and tried this again after some years and some bottles I did not like at all. This wine needs clearly more than 10 years to give pleasure and now I regret not having bought this wine on a regular base.

1998 Baillat - Cuvee Emilien Baillat
(France / Languedoc / Corbieres)
RATED: 09/01/2003
COMMENTS: (not blind): Bright purple, very dense, tints the glass. Nose after green walnuts and advent season. Same in taste, full body, very well balanced, roots. Aftertaste bitter tannins (hint of green walnuts) but soft. Score: 50 + 5 for optic + 14 for bouquet + 18 for taste + 8 for overall = total score of 95.

This is an incredible value for $16,-. I was not able to buy younger vintages because the retailer stopped selling it - too cheap and too hard to sell. Bad combination.

My tip for this wine was Pegau (which I missed in this tasting because it was corked). I know I am a bit high with my score here but this has to have something to do with personal preferences.

2001 Royer - Sola Syrah Regalis
(France / Rhone / Southern Rhone / Chateauneuf du Pape)
RATED: 02/01/2004
COMMENTS: (single blind): Nice purple, fat tears, tints the glass. Very fine and complex nose, tends towards honey comb. Full to medium body, bit austere tannins, good grip. Finish very long, smoky velvety. Score: 50 + 4 for optic + 14 for bouquet + 18 for taste + 9 for overall = total score of 95.

Had this wine never before - a 100% Syrah CdP, kind of experiment but very impressive. Cailloux made 1995 a 100% Syrah named Boreal - but this had more of an Australian Shiraz while the Royer showed some finesse.

RATED: 03/01/2004
COMMENTS: (not blind): Bright and brilliant purple, very dense tears (and it has only 12.5 % alcohol), tints slightly the glass. Very nice barnyard touch, chocolate, fine toast, fine dark intense fruit (not primary), silky. Medium body, good grip, good acidity, dark silky fruit, powerful but fine tannins - without food a bit on the acidity side. Long aftertaste, silky tannins, fine dark fruit, mouth impregnating. Score: 50 + 5 for optic + 15 for bouquet + 17 for taste + 8 for overall = total score of 95.

XL stands for 40 months in new oak (don't find this wine oaky) "sur lie", 100% Tannat.

COMMENTS: (not blind): Brilliant dark purple, medium tears, tints the glass. Vanille, curd soap, spearmint, barnyard. Full to medium body, coriander, massive sappy dark concentrated port fruit, opulent, bit fat and overripe. Aftertaste concentrated in the middle of the tongue, dark fruit, velvety tannins, some dark chocolate. Score: 50 + 5 for optic + 14 for bouquet + 18 for taste + 8 for overall = total score of 95.

Single Quinta Vintage Port with finished fermentation and no sprit added - the level of fruitiness is a bit over the limit for me. Most powerful wine and potentially great.

2001 Quinta do Vale Dona Maria
(Portugal / Douro)
RATED: 06/01/2004
COMMENTS: (not blind): Deep purple yet brilliant, tints the glass, incredible high viscosity. Very concentrated multilayered nose after dark fruit, chocolate, spices, toast ... Full to medium full body, huge but clean fruit, nice acidity, fine tannin grip. Warm feeling in the aftertaste, bit coriander from cask. Score: 50 + 5 for optic + 14 for bouquet + 18
for taste + 8 for overall = total score of 95.

Now and then one needs a glass of a really intense wine - this is it even if usually I prefer them a bit less impressive. The core seems a bit high but this happens if you drink this wine stand alone without comparison with other 2001 Douro reds with even more concentration.

RATED: 06/01/2004
COMMENTS: (single blind): Powerful garnet, brilliant, medium tears. Ascending sweet alcohol, red berries, minimal Bazooka. Full to medium body, subtle acidity, massive tannins, not very elegant. Aftertaste long and velvety. Score: 50 + 3 for optic + 14 for bouquet + 19 for taste + 9 for overall = total score of 95.

This is a rather powerful and full wine and certainly great – but for me a bit overextracted, I prefer my Richebourg as slim hardbody.

1998 Quinta Do Crasto - Vinha Maria Teresa - Tinto
(Portugal / Douro)
RATED: 07/01/2004
COMMENTS: (not blind, Magnum): Violet purple, opaque, fat tears, virtually stains the glass with extract. Dark berries, velvety. Full body, alcoholic, very concentrated dark fruit, smooth tannins, vivid acidity (without this wine would be considered fat), very well balanced, big amount of tartric sediment. Aftertaste intense dark fruit, velvety tannins, long. Score: 50 + 5 for optic + 14 for bouquet + 17 for taste + 9 for overall = total score of 95.

A really impressive wine. Dinner with friends in the garden, BBQ-style food without looking for a match, stemware not really ideal for tasting especially concerning bouquet, no decanting, note from memory. My initial intention was to taste vintage 2001 but by mistake I bought a 1998 bottle and to some degree I feared this bottle would be closed – this was not the case in any way.

COMMENTS: (not blind): Dark garnet, bright, fat tears. Candied almonds, moss, dark earth, mineralic, slightly decadent undertone - very nice nose alltogether. Medium body, some bright fruit, crisp acidity, silky tannins, very well balanced. Finish long, soft acidity, silky tannins, end of aftertaste echo of Belon oyster. Score: 50 + 4 for optic + 14 for bouquet + 18 for taste + 9 for overall = total score of 95. This was a pristine bottle.

2000 Domaine de la Mordoree - La Reine des Bois
(France / Rhone / Southern Rhone / Chateauneuf du Pape)
RATED: 12/01/2002
COMMENTS: (not blind): Purple, very fat tears, tints the glass. Lots of new wood, heavy dark fruit underneath, very light hint of CdP-typical stink after rotten vegetables - this should eventually become a beautiful bouquet. Full body, again lots of new wood, massive dark fruit and rather low acidity well hidden. Very long velvet aftertaste, very alcoholic. Probably I would not identify this wine as CdP in a blind tasting - there is simply too much new wood here and therefore this is not the classical CdP. Time will show but I am rather optimistic that this wine will develop nice. Score: 50 + 5 for colour, 14 for bouquet, 17 for taste and 9 for potential add up to a total of 95 points.
