2005 Equuleus - Paul Bpsc Estate Vineyards
(Canada / Ontario / Niagara Peninsula)
RATED: 05/12/2009
COMMENTS: The 2005 Equuleus is a classically styled blend of 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Cabernet Franc and 25% Merlot. Equuleus is only produced in exceptional vintages and is notable for its age worthiness and concentration. Aged for one year in French Troncais and Allier oak barrels, Equuleus is rich and full bodied with flavours of cassis and dark chocolate. Equuleus is the name of the "Little Horse" constellation, best seen when it rises in the night sky at harvest time every September. This equine symbol celebrates Chateau des Charmes' founder Paul Bosc's passion for Egyptian Arabian horses which are stabled at the Paul Bosc Estate, the family's home vineyard. Ready to drink now, but will continue to develop in the bottle for 5-10 years.

"The horse is back, bigger, stronger and better than ever. Chateau des Charmes' Equuleus is made from grapes harvested across the road at the Paul Bosc Vineyard and it is only made in the best years. The last time it surfaced was in 2002. This wine is a full on balls-to-the-wall red with a mixture of black and red fruit, strawberry, raspberry and cassis. The taste does not disappoint from the promise of the nose.

2003 E. Guigal - Cotes du Rhone
(France / Rhone / Southern Rhone / Cotes du Rhone)
RATED: 05/12/2009
COMMENTS: I got a lot more out of this than I expected, particularly given the age on it. Great value

good Guigal, with excellent palate - it just stays in your mouth. Unfortunately the graoes are not specified, but for sure it is Grenache, Syrah, probably Mourvedre, but what more?
We had twp bottles with Peter and Elli - good experience...

Excellent bottle, truly. Classic CDR profile. Good spice, smooth and rounded, tannins present, but not domineering. Much better than many similarly priced CDRs. By day 2, the fruit had dried up a bit (although the wine was still excellent), so I suggest opening and finishing at a sitting (or evening) unless of course you have one of those nitrogen systems (do they really work?). I would guess that this wine is at its peak now and will probably hold for a while. Really pleasantly surprising. (1988 views)

1999 Coach Cabernet Sauvignon - Insignia
(USA / California / Napa)
RATED: 05/12/2009
COMMENTS: Decanted and served after dinner. Lush mouth feel. Full bodied, with velvet tannins, although the tannins were still a little prominant for my tast. Still has several years of life left. Should have decanted about an hour or two before serving, as it got better as the night wore on

Oh my what a wine. Deep color with spicy cinnamon and Bordeauxesque aromas. Full, well structured, and focused with bright spicy red fruit, truffles, and minerality finishing with velvet gloves. This is beautiful and still going. It still has that young vibrant disposition.

90 Points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
The deep ruby/purple-colored 1999 Cabernet Sauvignon Coach Insignia (a 2,370-case blend of 76% Cabernet Sauvignon, 18% Merlot, and 6% Cabernet Franc) exhibits a creamy nose of chocolate, smoke, cassis, and licorice, an up-front, rich, fleshy, elegant style, medium body, and a sweet finish. Drink it over the next 8-10 years.

1998 Chateau Montelena Cabernet Sauvignon
(USA / California / Napa)
ALCOHOL: 13.9%
RATED: 05/12/2009
COMMENTS: The 1998 Montelena Estate Cabernet Sauvignon ripened late with a good crop. We had very cold, rainy weather throughout the early to middle growing season that set us up for a late vintage. There was virtually no spring; it just went from winter to summer, but not until July! Happily it ended up very well, even great, with miraculous ripening weather all of October. The Cabernet Sauvignon we saw was literally perfect - it doesn't get any better - with great flavors, ripeness and very good chemistry. The berry size was relatively normal, textbook fruit. We see the intensity of the vintage being very classic Cabernet Sauvignon; extremely well proportioned in weight and acid-tannin balance. Fermentation was clean and strong and the maceration range was generally 8 to 11 days. The skin to juice ratio was high so extraction was very good - many tanks were black by day two. It was an excellent vintage for all of our Cabernet vineyards

2006 Caymus Cabernet Sauvignon
(USA / California / Napa)
RATED: 05/12/2009
COMMENTS: 92 points Wine Spectator Insider: "Full-blown, ripe and rich, with intense and sharply focused dried currant, wild berry and blackberry fruit that's still fairly tannic at this stage. Ends with a long, persistent finish. Best from 2010 through 2015." (10/29/08) 90 points and one star from the Connoisseurs' Guide to California Wine: "Ripeness and sweet oak are the governing traits of this very rich and wide-open wine, and it is more geared to dark chocolate and caramelly sweetness than it is to classic Cabernet fruit. That said, it is positively plush on the palate with extract to spare, so much so, in fact, as to make its hard turn to tannin and heat an acceptable sin." (December 2008) Established in 1972 Caymus Vineyards is one of the benchmark cabernet sauvignon producers in Napa Valley, with an enviable track record of producing some of Napa's finest reds. The 2006 is a worthy successor in this lineage of full-bodied, fruit-forward, opulent cabs. The nose starts out with alluring aromas of cherry cola, cassis and coca powder while on the palate the wine displays flavors of blackberry, creme de cassis and sweet oak.

2001 Azelia - Voghera Brea - Reserva
(Italy / Northwest / Piedmont / Barolo)
RATED: 05/12/2009
COMMENTS: TASTING NOTE: The estate's 2001 Barolo Riserva Voghera-Brea is surprisingly open for a Serralunga Barolo in this vintage. Made in a sweet, ethereal style, this medium-bodied wine presents a lovely purity and sweetness in its stewed prunes, plums, leather, scorched earth and coffee beans. Judging by the lack of intensity in color as well as its relatively advanced aromas and flavors, this is not likely to be an extremely long-lived wine, but it is delicious today. The flavor profile is almost that of a more traditionally-made Barolo. Anticipated maturity: 2008-2016. Score - 91. (Antonio Galloni, www.erobertparker.com, Oct. 2007)

2005 Cuvee du Vatican - Reserve Sixtine

FLAVOR: Dark Fruits. Mineral. Lead. Alcohol. Burnt. Smoky. Asphalt. Plum. Black Currant. Coffee. Leather. Pepper.
PROFILE: Bitter. Balanced. Astringent Mouthfeel. Extracted Body. Heavy Tannin. Long Finish.
COMMENTS: Decanted for almost 5 hours, yet still tasted closed. The nose is complex, with notes of meat, smoke, flowers, spice, dried fruits. Yet the taste is somewhat unbalanced still, with coffee, spice and earthy tastes trying to break free from the hard tannins and the acidity. Very austere. Flavors are very extracted. I think this wine is good, but should get better in 3 years or more.
