2001 Robert Mondavi
Cabernet Sauvignon
-
Reserve
(USA / California / Napa)
|
ALCOHOL: 14.5%
CASES: 7,000
RATED: 11/19/2004 |
|
|
|
| COMMENTS: |
This huge Cabernet is indicative of the old school Mondavi Reserves and is worth the high price. Opaque purple color and syrupy-sweet smelling aromas entice, but the high tannins make you want to wait an hour or so to drink. Much like other big Napa cabs (Pride, DAV, etc) this one doesn't disappoint. Berries, black currant, graphite and grilled steak dominate the first few glasses until it mellows, the tannins fade and the next two hours of drinking are smooth and silky with a 40+ second finish. One of the best Mondavi Reserve Cabs to date.

Just a huge mouthcoating wine. The best Elyse Morisoli Zin to date IMHO. Layer apon layer of bursting flavor. Gobs of spice and big red fruit. Ripe and raisiny on the finish that lasts lasts.

This Sauterne is very very good !!! It's very closed of a porto for the texture in the mouth. The taste is unique. Bought in the productor house that's why the price is not very high. If you buy it on stores it will be about 90$ in france and very expensive in the USA for exemple. Mail me if you taste it I will be please to know how it cost out of France.

| COMMENTS: |
A truly complex dessert wine. In my book it does not merit the 100pt scores it has been garnering in the popular press as it did not blow me away. Nonetheless, a great wine that transitions on the palate from sweet honey, to floral-lychee, then nice crisp light fruits. Not as viscous as I thought it would be.

Wow...Reminds me a lot of the Krug Grand Cuvee in style. I will definitely be seeking out more Tarlant for my Champagne needs. Heavy bodied, but with a mean streak of acidity throughout. Well balanced beer-infused flavors.

The best bottle of this wine that I've had so far. deep purple in color. Aromas of currant and dark fruit. Flavors of dark fruit, currant, licorice and some mint. Rich smooth body and a long finish. At its peak right now. There is some bottle variation but this was a good one. Excellent!

| COMMENTS: |
Charles Ellner is quickly becoming on of my favorite Champagne houses. Everything they turn out is exceptional, with this 1990 being one of the best. This sparkler is quite lively in the glass and presents a straw yellow color that has slightly faded with age. The body is somewhere between mid-weight and full-bodied. The nose is nutty/bready. On tasting, the wine deftly sits in your mouth and proceeds through a cascade of typical Champagne flavors of bread and yeast with some light fruits. The finish is long and drawn out. A great value.

| COMMENTS: |
My favorite of the 2002 Diamond Creek wines. First and foremost, the Diamond Creek wines seem to be much more fruit-forward this year than last. A beautiful red-purple wine that is deeply extracted. This starts out with a strong, perfume filled nose of blueberry and cassis. In the mouth this wine explodes with ripe fruits, giving a slightly tingly sensation mid-palate. A long finish. In my opinion, better than the 2001, but probably won't age as well. Moderately tannic, but with some air time I like the way this wine is drinking right now.

The 1997 Cooper-Garrod Cabernet Sauvignon will ruin you for high priced cabs. This $35 cab has a prodigious bouquet and is very well balanced on the palate. The wine produces aromas of spice and dark fruit against a dark purple color. In the mouth, figs, jam, and blackberries balance subtle hints of earth. The wine has a velvety texture that complements its excellence structure. Your will not do better $35/Botttle.

Brilliant medium ruby, medium tears. Slight barnyard, pure dark fruit, cool moss, earth, mineral. Medium body, clean dark fruit, fine acidity, persistent tannins, well balanced. Long aftertaste, fine fruit, smoky mouth impregnating tannins in the end. A very fine wine. Will profit from some more cellaring. Score: 50 + 4 for optic + 14 for bouquet + 18 for taste + 8 for overall = total score of 94.
Not blind. Not decanted. Small ISO standard tasting glass. Perfect match with Daube provencale.

| COMMENTS: |
My first time ever tasting Neal Family cab. This bottling was only their second vintage, however, the family has been tending vineyards in Napa for many years. The experience shows here!
This is definitely one of the best 99 cabs I have had. It is a beautifully deep brick red color. Once decanted, this wine kicks out blackberries, chocolate, earth and leather. It takes over your entire mouth with a viscous feel that leads to a marvelous finish. The tannins are thick, but not disjointed, so this one should age for quite some time. A great wine.
I had this up against a pristine bottle of 1997 Cooper-Garrod George's Vineyard and it held its own.

The 94 Reserve Cab from Mondavi is drinking beautifully now, but I suspect it might be even better in just a few years. It is a deep red-purple with sweet, soft dark fruits, cedar, smoke and black currant on the nose and palate. This is one of Napa's best, being complex and multidemsional with a rich body and well tamed drying tannins. It has a long, semi-mineralic, finish.
