Ruby red. Nose is loaded with red fruits, raspherry, strawberry, plums and hints of ceder wood. On the palate it is balanced, rounded, smooth as velvet but not viscous. The fruits linger with a bit of game favor as well. Medium length to long with some minerals in the finish. Decanted for 90 minutes.

Such purity! This wine is probably the purest expression of Pinot Noir. Glorious fruit with refine and polished mouthfeel. Very well extracted but at the same time not a bit heavy. Complex layers of flavor with clarity and finesse.

Ruby red. Nose is not very intense but with a nice bouquet of fresh strawberries, cherries, followed by casse fruits and black currant. Very concentrated fruits on the palate, well balanced, medium-bodied with a supple texture. Medium to long finish with some complexity. Excellent wine, would have been really outstanding if there is more structure. Perhaps five more years down the road.... Decanted for about 90 minutes.

Two sensations: At the first, this nice fruity wine has a fresh attack, a full-bodied evolution and a lively finish. Secondly, the wine has a supple attack and a well-structured evolution. To finish, a rich, velvety perception which stays a long time in mouth. Great sensation of pleasure in the whole palet.

COMMENTS:
Don't believe everything you read in magazines. After 10 years in the bottle, this vintage was a welcome surprise; in fact, I believe this wine will drink well for another 5-8 years. The smooth texture and well-balanced fruit in combination with a ripe fragrance led me to wonder why the seller decided to part with such a pleasing wine. This is one of my favorite Bordeaux-style Napa Cabs. For the price I paid (let's just say less than the current vintage), I'd buy another case if I could find it.

COMMENTS:
The Black sears Vineyard was made famous by Turley, but the folks at Howell Mountain Vineyards are making a statement with this wine. I'm not sure why it's so much better than other HMV vintages, other than growing conditions. We had this at the end of the night in a 14-bottle tasting, but it was a favorite for the Zin-drinkers. The ripe fruit and concentrated spicy/sweet flavors in this classic Zin left me wanting more. An almost floral-fragrant nose and beautiful long finish give this wine a spot on my Cardinal Zin list. It might be the best I've ever tasted. I have no doubt that it will age well for another 5 years, but why wait? Drink Now!

Being new to supertuscans, and a bigger Chianti fan than other Italian reds, I was thoroughly impressed with this wine. A group of friends drank a magnum of this with chicken parmesan and tortellini, which was a wonderful complement to this rich, smooth, full-bodied wine. The structure was straightforward; the flavors of fruit were deep and ripe. The finish is what truly made me not want to set down my glass; the initial taste lasted over a minute. I could have eaten crackers and been happy, to be honest. I think some time in the bottle has helped improve the character; this wine is likely in its prime, so if you can find it, enjoy it soon.

COMMENTS:
On a cave tour of Miner last Summer, we were lucky enough to taste several different wines pre-release. The last two we tried were the 2000 Oakville Cab in the barrel and the 2001 Oakville Cab from the tank. The 2001 had been aging for close to two years and already blew away the 2000. The aromas were pure Oakville and the ripe, rich fruits dominated this big red. The finish is still developing and was semi-tart, but that will settle out in the barrel, if the 2000 proved anything to us. I have a case pre-ordered from my local shop, but I may have to go for the mags at the winery as well. I can't wait!

|
COMMENTS:
I first tasted the AF '01 Savoy Pinot at a tasting dinner and it was truly amazing; Savoy obviously follows in Floodgate's footsteps. Most Pinots I've had are not nearly as big and rich as this one, so this review is meant to praise the winemaker's style as much as this particular vintage. Imagine blending a Turley Zin with a Martinelli Pinot. You'd get a complex structure; a well-balanced tannic backbone with big bold fruit & jam from first sip to minutes after you set down your glass. The nose was ripe with cherry-pie notes and oak; flavors in the mouth like cocoa, leather and berries combined to form a very pleasing and drinkable medium-bodied wine. The finish was long and lush, lasting sometimes until I picked up the glass again. This was my last bottle, but I believe this wine will age for another 3-5 years with the same outcome.

COMMENTS:
I'm never taking this to a tasting again...Instead I'm keeping it all for myself! The 2001 Atlanta WC Cab tasting was held at Cabernet in Alpharetta, GA, last night with 24 WCer's and guests. We had the Pride Cab second on the evening, so our palates weren't completely blown out yet.
The aromas were full and rich, the color was deep purple/red, almost black. This Cab really needed alot more time to open up, as the tannins were high and it was tightly wound around its core of deep berry and black fruit flavors, however, the extraction was deep...there are complex flavors here that never came to the surface due to the limited supply. Hints of baker's chocolate and tobacco hit near the back of my tongue as the finish was long and full. Currently, the 1999 Pride Cab is my favorite, but by the time I'm done with it, the 2001 is sure to take its place. This wine should age superbly into the next decade...I'd wait before opening, but if you can't resist, give it a couple hours of airtime first.

I saw that WS gave this a 94, but wasn't very excited initially; my personal experience with this winery has been 'just OK' until recently. No decant was necessary here, as this huge red drank extremely well right out of the bottle.
A spicy blend of plums, blue & blackberry jams, and dark cherry juice was complemented by a 'just right' dose of anise, cassis and leather on the mid-palate. I actually tasted grapes, along with a myriad of other cooked black fruits on the long, lustrous finish. I may call and get more of this today...I highly recommend this wine as a 'drink now' selection, but there's no doubt it will age for another 5+ years.

We did a little mini-vertical last night with several Pride Merlots and a few others, including '00 Twomey and '99 Northstar, which couldn't surpass Pride's deep extraction and flavor. This wine isn't a typical merlot; in fact, it reminded me at times of a Syrah. The most interesting thing I found when comparing the '96, '98, '01 and '02 Pride was the progression toward maturity of this wine over time. The development from 'a nice wine' to 'a real stunner' says something about the winemaker's abilites. This vintage is very complex, fruit-forward and rich, but it's so big that we decanted it for over an hour before we started in. The nose is lush and full with berries and leather. The tannins were high, but had subsided mostly by the time we got around to drinking it. Very full-bodied in the mouth, heavy for a merlot, with dark sweet fruits throughout and hints of licorice, cocoa and graphite on the mid-palate. The finish was long and smooth with a nice aftertaste. You can drink this now or hold; it will age well for another ten years at least.

COMMENTS:
How many times have you unfoiled a bottle to find that the cork had soaked through? And how often did this happen with a really nice bottle? Saturday at Chastain Park, I opened this one to discover just that. I immedaitely opened it to discover, to my sheer awe, that the wine was untainted. Although we only had hors d'ouvres with it, this was a classic bottle of Shafer.
Much smoother than the younger 1999 vintage, I can only imagine that bottle-time has mellowed this big red. The nose was full black fruits and hints of honeysuckle. Flavors included dark chocolate, cooked cherries and licorice with a blackberry cobbler-style sweetness. The texture was firm, but not over-the-top. I think the tiniest bit of oxygen touched this wine and flattened it out ever-so-mildly, but still a truly amazing glass. The succulent finish last a minute or so and I wanted to wring out the bottle for the last few drops. I would say this vintage would age for another 10 years or so, but you can really enjoy it now.

I'll write this review about the last glass from the bottle, but let it be said that each glass leading to the last was equally as impressive and different.
Aromas of long cut pouch tabacco and leather fill the senses as a panolpy of rich black fruit flavors accented by an undertone of tar floods the palate. The acidity and tannins provide struture and balance.
This wine drinks beautifully now and will only improve with time.

A rich and expansive nose full of varying aromas as each glass was poured and evolved. To name a few...black cherries, raspberry, roasted meat, coffee, and minerals.
On the palate the experience was the same, an astonishing array of sweet ripe dark fruits with a fatness in the mouth balanced by well integrated acidty.
Out of the bottle, the tannins were present on the finish. Once decanted for an hour, prior to the meal, the tannins were nicely integrated. This wine will only improve with age. I'd love to try it again in 5-7 years.
Purchased at Premier Cru.

Light garnet, brilliant, fat tears, light rim. Honeycomb in the nose, slightly sweet caramelised. Medium body, velvety tartish tannins, slightly bitter touch, acidity somewhat dominating. Velvety tartish finish. Very good match with ribbon noodles with butter and white truffles. Nose and optic are a bit misleading and give the impression of a certain ripeness. I mistook this for the 1990 vintage.
