Pinot Noir
(New Zealand / South Island / Canterbury / Waipara)

RATED: 01/24/2009 |

|
COMMENTS:
The nose shows aromas of cherry and earth. The palate expresses cherry and raspberry fruits, dry earth, forest floor, barnyard, tar, panfried mushrooms and black olives. Round in the mouth, the wine's acidity is well integrated with the fruit and the tannins are hardly perceptible. There is a little too much 'stewed fruit' flavor for my taste, and the wine lacks focus at this early stage. A second bottle was opened and drunk over an entire week and the wine never faded. Happily, the fruit settled down and the wine gained additional complexity and focus. Another year or two in the bottle will do this wine some good.

COMMENTS:
This is a full-bodied offering with smooth texture, great structure, and up front GSM fruit characters. Complexity comes in the form of a peppery/tannic mid-palate, minerals, herbs, and some barnyard influences on the finish.

COMMENTS:
Big candied raspberry and cherry aromas on the nose. The palate: richer and more complex than the nose would suggest, with fruit elements beautifully integrated with a grainy tannic structure, balanced acidity, spice, and timber elements from oak aging. Made from eighty-year-old vines and aged in a mixture of American and French oak for ten months-a real palate-teaser that's hard to pin down.

COMMENTS:
Made from 85-year-old vines. The nose shows berry fruits, liquorice, and a fine herbal aroma. It's round and soft on the palate, medium to full bodied with layers of deep red and blue fruits mingling with gentle spicy notes, interesting and complex. The acidity is balanced, and the tannins are soft but clearly present giving firmness to the fruit. The fruit, herbs and spice notes carry through to the finish where the ripe tannins are more evident.

COMMENTS:
The nose reveals hints of red fruits and herbs, but is rather closed at the moment. By contrast, the flavors on the palate are very inviting, showing dark berry fruits, flowers, herbs, spice and cedar. The wine has excellent tannic grip that keeps the fruit in check. It is already delicious, but it has the stuff to get better with time.

COMMENTS:
Chateau Taillefer 2005 (Pomerol) Has a very rich and powerful nose. However, structure is a bit off. Has taste of berries and plums typical of Merlot, yet offset by a strange meaty taste. I wonder if that's from the Cabernet Franc. This is my first try of this grape. Nothing great. The bottle was left unfinished.

Very fine and has an elegant texture. Has notes of cherry, nuts, and some faint taste of olive oil. Takes a while to really open and present its flavors. Well received by everyone. It's a good preview to the other more famous wines of this winery - Roda I and Cirsion.

Campillo Grand Reserva 1995 (Rioja) This is a 100% Tempranillo from Campillo, a boutique winery in Rioja founded by the owner of Faustino Wines. This wine exhibited qualities you expect from an old wine. The tannins were really soft, yet silky. It had strong cherry and even a candy-like taste. Since it's a 13 year old wine, it is exhibiting some age already. This should be consumed right away!

COMMENTS:
Clos Mogador Manyetes 2005 (Priorat) This is a Carinena (70%) - Garnacha (30%) wine. It is bold, yet still closed. Rod told us that Barbier recommends his wines, esp. the Mogadors to be opened at least 5 hours before drinking. This is true as I had a similar experience with the Mogador. Where it opened up way after. But once it did, it was great. As for the Manyetes, even the Vinturi couldn't bring out the full character of the wine. Still, it showed potential. The mineral characters associated with Priorat's soil was evident. The wine has notes of cherry and jam, very good and intense nose. Very fruity with some spiciness. Complex and well balanced. Tannins are very pronounced and flavorful, you can really chew into it. Has a very good finish. Sadly, we didn't have 5 hours to wait for the wine to open up that day.

Really good wine, the longer it was open, the better it evolved. The tannin was very strong, but didn't overpower, lending a great chewiness to the wine. The bouquet was rich. This will definitely get even better in 3 years or more.

COMMENTS:
Rich spicy, liquorice root, black cherry, mineral, saddle leather nose with tobacco and cedar notes. Ripe, round, dry palate with supple but grainy tannins and juicy acidity. Black cherry, plum, licorice, resin, peppery, savoury, spicy, leather, tobacco flavours. A touch rustic but otherwise solid fruit and extract. Will improve over the next few years but drinkable with beef or lamb now. Fantastic value for Barbaresco.

The color is a radient light gold. The nose is effusive with white flowers, lime, wet stone mineral, sugar cane, honeydew melon, almost a ginger ale component. The mouthfeel had moderate viscosity and yet is dry. All of the aromatics lay out on the palate in layers, with great lenght on the finish. Extraordinary for American Riesling!
