| COMMENTS: |
Sampled 11/16/04. This wine did not take very long to open up and is showing beautifully. The color is much deeper than I thought it would be. The nose more California Cabernet-like than expected, but still clearly not California. The tannins are now completely softened and the layering of fruit, earth, spices and oak are nearly perfectly balanced. The wine has a rich finish that lasts about 15 to 20 seconds. Although perfectly ready to drink now, it might still be good 5 years from now, but why risk it?

Quite possibly the best port I have ever had... If you like syrah and port, you have to try this. This fruity, woody, velvety port just makes your mouth water and want more. Careful, you may finish the whole bottle next to the fireplace if you are not careful...If you can find this limited release, do not hesitate in buying it!

reconditioned at the Chateau in 1994. Very velvety and smooth and caressing like a velvet. Much thicker body then the typical lafite. Rose pedal like aromas with some earthy tones but restrain and classy. Complexity is not its strength but it is all about elegence. Very very well balance with a good finish.

very high quality, top-class, noble and generous flavors and aromas. you will find aromas that are perfectely combined with big complexety as for inst; coffee, black berry, smoked aromas but in a tender, delicate and sensitive way. You could add some mineral aroms but difficult for me to identify. This is a wine for special occasions with special people... enjoy this "merveille"

ALCOHOL: 14.5%

| COMMENTS: |
Appearance: clear, dark garnet turning rusty on the rim
Nose: dried cherry, some orange peel, fig, raisin, earth, hint of tar/tobacco
Palate: clean, full tannins, high acidity, full body, cherry, dried cherry, orange, hint of spearmint, raisin
Wow! what a wine! the front is silky smooth and slips over the tip of your tongue and then the acidity and fruit spead out over the middle and back palate. Great mouthfeel and viscosity. The tannins, fruit and acidity are in magnificent harmony...both the acidity and tannins are gigantic, graceful, lively, and precise...creating an extremely well rounded, complex and superbly integrated wine. Secondary flavors or raisin and dried fruit linger for minutes. So soft, supple, and powerful. There is some heat at the end but it only seems to remind me of how magnificent a wine this is and the mouthwatering acidity calms the heat immediately.
An inexpensive wine this is not, however, it is relatively inexpensive and a great buy compared to many other bottles out there. I highly recommend splurging on a bottle of this Val di Suga. Make sure it is the 2001, other Val di Suga vintages are very good...this one is great. Mmmmmmmmmmmmm

| COMMENTS: |
Krug is the king of champange. Their non-vintage (NV) champange is extraordinary. The appearance is a breath-taking amber with extremely tight and consistent bubbles. The nose is nutty and smells like a thick draft ale. The boquet mixes hazelnuts and macadamia nuts. On the front palate, the wine starts with melted butter and beer. Toward the middle tongue, the beer and butter evolve into cream. After about 20 seconds on the middle of the tongue, hints of citrus fruit become detactable. As the wine reaches the back palate, a full basket of citrus fruit dominates the flavor. The wine has the longest finish of any wine I have every tasted. All the different tastes from all regions of the tongue remain present on the palate for at over 120 seconds!! The back palate finishes with crisp lemon and lime. Krug is not to be drunk, but rather, it is to be relished and adored.
Be careful, Krug may ruin you for other champagne.

This wine is haunting. I woke up the next morning thinking about it. It took me over two days to write up the note. A WOW wine. First impression: a strange yellow/clear/greenish hue that looks slick. Upon tasting, that slick appearance translated into an oily texture. When putting the glass down after the first taste, I thought this really couldn't be wine. Rather a synthetic blend created by a scientist whose sole goal was to extract as much complexity out of a liquid as is allowed by nature. What flavors? I don't really know. Perhaps pear, alcohol, and minerals. But those in combination don't do it justice. In the mouth, it builds and builds with increasing heat, leading to a long finish.
This was phenomenal.

| COMMENTS: |
For those of you worried about opening this wine too soon, don't. We had this with dinner at Joel last night and sommelier almost scolded us for opening such a nice young wine. It didn't matter because it's one of the best Cabs I've ever tasted. There's nothing bad about this wine...difficult not to give it a 100, but I think it would be better in another 8-10 years.
The nose was deep black berries and plummy fruit. Concentrated, deeply extracted berries and lightly spicy black fruit swirl in the mouth and finish long and lustrous...even satiny. The only thing that comes close is the 99 Hillside Select, except the DAV had virtually no tannic interference. I'm SO glad I'm on this list. I'm beginning the search today for more...go buy as much as you can!

This wine has a golden yellow color with a hint of orange. It has a very expressive smell. in mouth, this wine has a very refreshing attack with dried orange aromas after. It is very complex in mouth : it has not a sweety evolution. It is well-balanced with bitterness and nervousness. It is a very gorgeous wine !

A super-complex, mid-weight sparkler from Austria. I would throw this in with the best of what France is turning out! Very difficult to find (not generally available at retail), I have seen it only a handful of times at SF restaurants. The $50 I paid was off the list at Baccar in SF.

The first and most striking aspect of this wine is it's color: a dark amber. Perhaps that is influencing the flavors I get from it, but I think it tastes like beer. This is of course in addition to its multi-dimensional flavors of coffee, toast, bread, yeast and wood. In the nose you can even pick these out distinctly. The finish on this wine will have you hoarding it all to yourself.

| COMMENTS: |
The 2001 Neal Family Cabernet is going to be a cult classic. Anyone who can get ahold of a case, should do so and store it for a decade. Even now, well before its peak, this wine's bouquet produces a magnificent aroma of licorice and pepper. In the mouth, the velvety wine's viscousity is so prodigious that one can feel its legs on their tongue. A highly diverse group of flavors is present on the palate. The tip of the tongue senses blueberries and plums. On the tongue's center, one gets mild herbs and chocolate against the purvasive flavor and texture of jam. This wine produces at least three distinct flavors while in the mouth, and its finish last for 25+ seconds. The best part is that I believe this wine will improve steadily for more than a decade. I sincerely believe that this wine will become one of the great california cabernets.

It appears to posses a duel personality. The bouquet and aroma was like a constant switching back and forth with two different profile. One being like a light-hearted floral and elegant lady and the other like a demure captain with pure nose of cassis and other black fruits intertwined with profound richness, great complexity, and full body.
Very interesting wine that keeps your curiosity going.

It reminded my of the glorious 1978. I am curious how the 1978 compare to the 1990 when they are at about the same age. Definitley the 1990 is a great wine with pretty much everything you look for, complexity, balance and charm. It is still a bit young to assess the wine and I am not very good at it. I would love to be able to taste it again when it gains more mature complexity.

1984 Silver Oak
Cabernet Sauvignon
(USA / California / Napa)
|
RATED: 04/09/2004 |

| COMMENTS: |
Because of its age, I'd recommend decanting for at least an hour, which we did. For an older CA Cab, sediment was almost nonexistent in the bottle. The nose is classic oak/fruit that Silver Oak seems to have patented; the dense fruit concentration of cooked cherries, plums & berries was amazing on the tongue. Combine this with cocoa and a little vanilla and it was like drinking dessert with our dinner. VERY smooth with no tannic interference. I discovered my two bottles in a Nashville wine shop that was clearing out the cellar for $80/each. If you can find any, definitely invest and drink it soon; this wine is peaking now.
