1996 Domaine Francois Mikulski - Les Santenots - 1er Cru
(France / Burgundy / Cote de Beaune / Volnay)
RATED: 05/01/2003
COMMENTS: (not blind): Very light garnet, very clear, black touch, fine tears. Very PN-typical nose, expressive red berries. Medium body, well balanced, some fruit, fine acidity spine, soft tannins. Aftertaste silky acidity. Very flexible with food. Score: 50 + 3 for optic + 14 for bouquet + 17 for taste + 7 for overall = total score of 91.

I don't have much experience with Volnay so this was a nice surprise for a reasonable price (70 Euro in a restaurant).

1999 Chateau du Cedre - Le Cedre - Sue-Ouest
(France / Southwest / Cahors)
RATED: 05/01/2003
COMMENTS: (single blind): Dark ruby, clear, medium tears, tints slightly the glass. Dark berries in the nose, fresh roasted coffee beans. Full to medium body, very well balanced, fine acidity. Aftertaste bit mouth impregnating. Score: 50 + 4 for optic + 14 for bouquet + 18 for taste + 8 for overall = total score of 94.

This wine was a really nice surprise, found even some finesse here - not a bit rustic what you would expect from a "black" wine.

1996 Jacques Prieur - Grand Cru
(France / Burgundy / Cote de Nuits / Chambolle-Musigny)

This wine was not so fine as I thought it would be and was also hard to pair with food - found no perfect match here.

1999 Chateau de la Negly - Clos des Truffiers

This wine is certainly impressive but I cannot drink a second glass here. Seems nearly identical with the Porte du Ciel bottling. But this is a wine (means Truffiers or Ciel) to identify with absolute security when tasting blind.

1999 Ernst Triebaumer - Marienthal - Blaufrankisch
(Austria / Burgenland)
RATED: 08/01/2004
COMMENTS: (not blind): Black ruby, violet rim, fat tears, tints the glass. Lead pencil, restrained dark fruit, cacao, coffee, dense. Medium body, not too fine but persistent tannins, dark fruit, acidity with elderberry touch, dense. Long finish, dark fruity velvety. Bit tight but very interesting. Reminds me somehow of the Lynch Bages 1988 I had some days
ago from Magnum. This is definitely an outstanding wine with great potential for cellaring. Score: 50 + 5 for optic + 13 for bouquet + 17 for taste + 8 for overall = total score of 93.

2000 Bayer-Erbhof Pinot Noir - In Signo Tauri
(Austria / Burgenland)
RATED: 06/01/2003
COMMENTS: (not blind): Brilliant ruby, hint of violet, fat tears. Nose on the border of a fault - fresh chalked wall, swimming pool (chlorine). Full to medium body, concentrated fruit, massive, low acidity of very well hidden, sweet oak. Aftertaste little bit impregnating. Score: 50 + 3 for optic + 10 for bouquet + 17 for taste + 6 for overall = total score of 86.

Nose changes to honeycomb in the empty glass, so this gives some hope that the bouquet will evolve into something nice over time. Some red fruit in the taste and the impregnating aftertaste gives a hint that this could be PN - but this wine seems a very good example to me of how to make wine against the varietal.

This does not sound really appealing - but you have to try this wine with dandelion (not the flower but the young leaves including a bit of the root in early spring) salad and you have top harmony in taste.
