This bottle had probably a problem or else this Ornellaia vintage is simply not very good.

1997 Poeckl Pinot Noir
(Austria / Burgenland)
RATED: 08/01/2003
COMMENTS: (not blind): Dark garnet, clear, nice tears. Some PN-fruit, rather brooding and not very expressive. Medium body, some red fruit, nice acidity, rather harsh tannins. Aftertaste bit oaky. Score: 50 + 3 for otpic + 12 for bouquet + 16 for taste + 7 for overall = total score of 88.

Never gave any attention to Pinot Noir from Austria until now but the reds of Austria keep coming. This was an excellent match for crawfish and other rather exotic spiced seafood and gave combined with food much better drinking as the score indicates.

1998 Domaine Clavel - Copa Santa
(France / Languedoc / Coteaux du Languedoc)
RATED: 08/01/2003
COMMENTS: (not blind): Very dark purple, opaque, very dense tears. Powerful perfumed nose after dark berries, some liquorice, alcohol and oak. Full body, full taste, dark fruit, some liquorice, bit sweet alcohol. Long aftertaste, velvety, sweet fruit. Score: 50 + 5 for otpic + 13 for bouquet + 17 for taste + 7 for overall = total score of 92.
Had this wine after the 1997 Poeckl Pinot Noir in the hope of a better match with the roasted lamb. Did not really work, bit too much salt on the lamb with a bit too much sweet fruit in the wine. The PN would have done better. Anyway this is a very impressive wine and an incredible value.

COMMENTS: (not blind): Light yellow, golden touch, bright. Nose not very expressive, some perfume of grapes. Medium to plump body, low acidity, bit fat, taste of pears and peach, bit alcoholic. Very long aftertaste. Score: 50 + 4 for optic + 12 for bouquet + 18 for taste + 8 for overall = total score of 92.

As far I am able to evaluate white wine (usually not my thing especially when the alcohol is a bit dominating) I would say this wine is fine to drink now even if I was a bit disappointed by the bouquet. This wine should be a really good match with some fusion dishes (and I was told Japanese sushi and shasimi) and goes surprisingly well with fresh fruit like pears - usually a rather hard task for a wine.

RATED: 08/01/2003
COMMENTS: (not blind): Very bright crimson, rather fat tears. Very nice nose of secondary red currant, green pepper, smoked ham, bit of compost ... Medium body, very fine acidity, some secondary red fruit, soft tannins and more. Long soft velvety aftertaste. Score: 50 + 4 for optic + 15 for bouquet + 18 for taste + 8 for overall = total score of 95.

Made curious by enthousiastic comments on Trevallon 1990 on another BB I remembered the 2 bottles of 1989 I had still in my cellar and tried this again after some years and some bottles I did not like at all. This wine needs clearly more than 10 years to give pleasure and now I regret not having bought this wine on a regular base.

Shows character of a fine Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru. Perfect match to braised trout fillets. 3 years ago I thought this wine to be over the hill and now I find it rather steady - only 1 bottle left for further investigation.

I don't like this type of wine and decided to stop buying Australian wines some times ago - but then I had some Clarendon Hills Grenache based wines and some Shiraz from other producers which seemed rather fine and I thought this style to be gone and changed my mind, but now again...

COMMENTS: (not blind): Very light and bright ruby, nice tears. Bit alcoholic, still primary red fruit, slight PN-typical stink. Medium body, well balanced, some primary red fruit but decent, nice acidity, bit grassy? Silky tannins in the aftertaste, slightly mouth coating, long. Score: 50 + 3 for otpic + 13 for bouquet + 16 for taste + 7 for overall = total score of 89 with room for development in bouquet and taste.

Made the error to taste a freshly pressed juice of rassy red wine berries in between - the wine could then not compete with this load of primary fruit and got somewhat flat. This is exactly the reason why I don't need and like wines with primary fruit - if I want primary fruit I drink a juice and enjoy this better.
