2009 Gewurztraminer
Muscat

RATED: 05/07/2011 |

|
| COMMENTS: |
Color: This brilliant wine has a light pale yellow color
Smell: this wine has an expressive and pleasant smells of rose, litchi, muscat and violet
Mouth: This wonderful medium-bodied wine has a round attack and a crispy evolution. There is a balance between the liveliness and the roundness. It's a real great fruity wine, with a licorice taste. As this wine is round and supple at the beginning, we don't feel the acidity. There is a medium length at the end. We can conclude that it's a light wine, it doesn't climb up in the palate, we just feel a fruit explosion.
Comments: This wine is a simple wine, easy to drink wine. If we plug the nose, we feel acidity which is hiding by the fruity smells. Dry Gewurztraminer are delightful with curry, ethnic food in general (Thai, Indian food). They can be served with cheeses (roquefort) and dessert. In three words, this wine is supple, fruity and soft.

| COMMENTS: |
Pinot Noir grown in Carneros but produced in a Burgundian style. Domaine Carneros is owned by the Taitinger champage house and originally produced Chard and PN solely for their sparkling wines. Now they have 3 still PN's as well. This is the middle range wine and is a great food wine, offering enough body and classic PN acidity to pair well with a range of dishes. It's also quite sippable on it's own and I wish I had bought more. It's ripe and round on the palate but not too sweet and has a nice amount of earthiness that pulls it back towards the old world style. Oak tannins are well integrated.

| COMMENTS: |
In response to the three reviews on 11/20 and 11/22 (wayne; Mrs; iheidt) I hereby post this review in an attempt to clear this wine's unfairly sullied name.
I am very familiar with this producer (and I personally know the importer) and my store has carried the Brut Rose for several years. After reading the reviews posted, I can only conclude that the previous reviewers had a bad bottle that had been oxidizied or suffered some other mishandling somewhere along the line that caused the deterioration in quality they reported.
Normally, this is an excellent NV Brut Rose Champagne characterized by a subtle, light pink color; a citrusy and restrained red berry nose; fine bubbles, fairly creamy mousse, bracing acidity, grapefruit and meyer lemon with a hint of bitter cherry, mouthfilling but not a blockbuster, the intensity of the Pinot Noir comes through though the wine still retains some lightness and refreshes and cleanses the palate, finishes dry. Enjoy!

Delicious! Lots of vanilla and spice. We had this at dinner after an over-the-hill Medoc and a nice little Pomerol, so it was an excellent progression into full-blown ripe merlot. Reeally helped illustrate what makes new-world (esp. Cali) wines distinct. I actually preferred the Pomerol, but the Pride was a great wine. Great concentration, dark fruit and chocolate plus really round tannins.

Ohh yes. This is what Chardonnay was meant to taste like. Straw colored with a tinge of pale gold. Slightly honeyed nose, layered with red apple, melon and toasted nuts. Aromas continued to develop and evolve over the course of the meal. Texture on the palate was rich and full but still with a nice zap of acidity. Some ripe stone fruit on the attack, well integrated oak and alcohol make for a long slow finish with some honey blended with vanilla. Elegance in a glass.

Drank this at a restaurant, so price is not retail. A nice little bit of barnyard and funkiness on the nose when first opened. Developed nicely throughout the meal and the fruit continued to come out. Acidity was vibrant. Body was lighter than most other Gevrey's, but that tends to be the style of this producer.
