1986 Domaine J.L. Chave
(France / Rhone / Northern Rhone / Hermitage)
RATED: 10/01/2003
COMMENTS: (not blind): Brilliant ruby, dense tears, light rim. Very beautiful complex nose, bit mineralic, smokey. Medium to slim body, some acidity, decent black fruit. Long finish, velvety, impregnating. Distant echo of a fine Richebourg. Excellent match to beefsteak with black truffles. Score: 50 + 3 for optic + 14 for bouquet + 17 for taste + 8 for overall = total score of 92. The expectations were may be a bit too high and the score is may be a bit enthusiastic - it was not the great experience we hoped for with an old Hermitage from Chave. You really have to appreciate finesse if you go for the old ones - the power is gone and they are no longer as impressive as on release.

1985 Domaine de Trevallon

COMMENTS: (not blind): Dark ruby, dense, fat tears, slight sediment. Rooty nose, decent earth. Medium body, dark secondary fruit, some acidity, in total slightly unbalanced. Medium finish, bit velvety, bit sweet, nearly fat. Does not match well with food. Score: 50 + 3 for optic + 13 for bouquet + 16 for taste + 7 for overall = total score of 89. After my good impression of the 89 vintage some months ago I found this rather depressing.
