AROMA: Spice. Cherry. Raspberry. Herbal.
FLAVOR: Spice. Cherry. Cedar.
PROFILE: Balanced. Smooth Mouthfeel. Moderate Tannin. Long Finish.
COMMENTS: From the Hellenthal Vineyard, which is located between Cazadero and Fort Ross. Radio Coteau shares fruit from this vineyard with WH Smith. The winemaker, Eric Sussman, is turning out fantasic pinots in a more old world sytle. Let this one sit for a few years.

COMMENTS: A super-complex, mid-weight sparkler from Austria. I would throw this in with the best of what France is turning out! Very difficult to find (not generally available at retail), I have seen it only a handful of times at SF restaurants. The $50 I paid was off the list at Baccar in SF.

RATED: 05/24/2003
COLOR: Green Yellow.
AROMA: Light Fruits. Lemon.
FLAVOR: Light Fruits.
PROFILE: Unbalanced. Effervescent Mouthfeel. Lean Body. Short Finish.
COMMENTS: A very simple California sparkling wine. Don't let the name fool you, this stuff is produced by Domaine Chandon in Napa when they have too much bulk wine. Also sold in Europe under the Shadow Creek brand. Not terrible for the price.

PROFILE: Tart. Unbalanced. Astringent Mouthfeel. Medium Finish.
COMMENTS: A truly disgusting wine, 730ml quickly found its way down the drain. Please don't subject your friends to this. On a more positive note, the Chardonnay from Charles Shaw isn't always THIS bad.

1993 Marchesi de' Frescobaldi - Frescobaldi-Ferre
(Italy / Central / Tuscany / Brunello di Montalcino)
RATED: 05/24/2003
COLOR: Brown Red.
AROMA: Tobacco. Smoky. Leather. Earthy.
FLAVOR: Spice. Leather. Earthy. Burnt.
PROFILE: Bitter. Balanced. Complex. Moderate Heavy Tannin. Long Finish.
COMMENTS: In its black pet-coffin like encasing with a fabric label, you hope this wine will still deliver on taste. Luckily the showy presentation is one-upped by the wine itself. A delicious Brunello after 10+ years, the dusty tannins indicate to me that it still could have slept longer. A lucky buy at BevMo in SF for $50, I have seen this wine in Italy for 300 Euros.

PROFILE: Sweet. Unbalanced. Alcoholic Mouthfeel. Extracted Body. Light Moderate Tannin. Medium Finish.

ALCOHOL: 14.9%
CASES: 1,396
RATED: 05/26/2004
COLOR: Opaque Purple.
AROMA: Dark Fruits. Earthy.
FLAVOR: Dark Fruits. Licorice. Black Currant. Earthy.
PROFILE: Unbalanced. Complex. Viscous Mouthfeel. Rich Body. Moderate Tannin. Long Finish.
COMMENTS: Although I should not have tapped into the 2001 La Jota's this soon, I was eager to taste this highly touted vintage from a winery that used to produce some of Napa's top wines. Since its sale by Bill and Joan Smith to Markham Vineyards, however, I have not been particularly impressed with the wines. Less tannic than I expected for a Howell Mountain cab, this bottle seems to possess potential, but came up short on its overall balance. Deep, dark and brooding... but slightly disjointed at this stage.
